When English poet John Denne penned “No man is an island” in 1624 as part of his Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions prose, he eloquently summed up one basic truth that has withstood the test of time: no person, and particularly those who meet some level of success, is alone in their journey. Someone, at some point, was a trusted ally; a sounding board for your ideas and a strong shoulder to lean on.
Taking Denne’s words a step further, no one “should” be an island, particularly if he or she is looking to take his or her career success to a new level. There is power in numbers and the sooner you tap into that, the more rapidly you’ll ascend.
According to Black Card Books CEO and bestselling author Jean-Guy (JG) Francoeur, Joint Venture relationships – teaming up with another person, group of persons or a business entity for the purpose of expanding your influence and creating a more powerful market presence – “are among the top two strategies” he has used to carve out and maintain a very successful career in business.
“It (a Joint Venture) doesn’t require a lot of money, it doesn’t require a lot of investment up front (but) is does require some time and the ability to build and cultivate relationships, and find a win-win solution with people,” explains JG.
In its simplest form, seeking out and securing a speaking engagement is a Joint Venture. The business or organization that enlisted you to speak gains the benefit of educating its employees or members while you are provided a great forum to promote and sell copies of your book. It’s a win-win which sees both parties benefit.
As you roll out your marketing campaign, you’ll find you will be increasingly calling on others who can benefit your efforts. A joint venture, however, is a two-way street – hence the term “joint” – that requires you be prepared to give something in return. It’s the only way it can work.
“Find a way to help them benefit so they can help you benefit… find a way to work with each other,” notes JG.
“As a Joint Venture master, you have to become very good at identifying what it that people are looking for. You know how you find that out? You just ask them.”
There is indeed power in numbers – even when that number is just two.
As an author, seeking out a strategic alliance and sustaining good relationships with your allies is a sure win-win outcome. It is not just all about getting your books distributed or selling copies of your books to your ally’s network. But it will open more doors of opportunities such as speaking engagements, where your expertise will recognized. Being a Joint Venture Master will require careful planning and research, before jumping into the opportunity. CLICK HERE to grasp essential techniques when entering a Joint Venture.
ANWAR JUMABHOY: Thinking of Entering into a Joint Venture Arrangement? Heed the Advice of Gerry Robert – “Get It Down, then Get It Right!”
A recognized master at problem solving, Anwar Jumabhoy, author of the recently published book 9 Entrepreneurisms: Management Practice for a VUCA World, has exceptional Joint Venture (JV) expertise and experience. Better yet, he’s more than willing to share his wisdom.
Involved in several Joint Ventures over the past 30 years, Anwar stresses the importance of approaching every prospective JV with an open mind. It is important he adds, to not enter into a JV arrangement with someone you don’t know well. In other words, do your homework and nurture the relationship.
“Some JVs have worked while others have not; it’s no different than a marriage,” says Anwar.
“You don’t want to get into a JV with a partner you don’t know or one who doesn’t share the same values and aspirations as you. Differences in capabilities or competencies are great and can strengthen the relationship but always remember you cannot bridge a value gap.”
Anwar notes that the motivation for entering into a JV, for both parties, is to leverage the other’s strengths, because, individually, each doesn’t have all the skills or resources required, or they lack knowledge of a new territory or product.
To avoid problems, Anwar says it is “critical” to have an agreement in place that spells out, in simple terms, what each party is bringing to the JV arrangement and what their expectations are.
“Be open and honest with your prospective partner and talk about the hard stuff,” he says.
“You need to cover the possibility; regardless of how remote it might seem, of what to do if the parties have a falling out. What happens if you decide to terminate the JV?”
Quoting Black Card Books founder Gerry Robert, Anwar says “Get it down, then get it right!”
“If all goes well, you won’t have to refer to a binding agreement but if it doesn’t, both parties have a basis for handling the break-up, much like a pre-nuptial agreement.”

Anastasia Button – Author of #NewJobNewLife: The Millennial’s Take-Charge Plan for Success
For the longest time, life coach Anastasia Button, author #NewJobNewLife: The Millennial’s Take-Charge Plan for Success, conducted business on her own but eventually came to the full realization that she was spinning her wheels. After she made the decision to connect and work with as many as other entrepreneurs as possible, things changed dramatically for her.
“I’ve done many Joint Ventures, from podcasting on shows to asking guests to blog for my page and, most recently, joint venturing in a partnership for my book launch gala. All have brought great results and outcomes, from more exposure to generating immediate revenue,” says Anastasia.
Her book launch gala, she says, remains a particularly impressive Joint Venture success story.
“I knew that I wasn’t going to have a gala with thousands in attendance, so I decided to go for a smaller venue and got creative,” explains Anastasia.
“I had been exposed to the John Elway Cadillac dealership in the past. I asked the general manager (who I had developed a relationship with) if he would be open to partnering for the event. Without hesitation, he said yes. Not only did I get the new car showroom as my (launch) space but they also put funds towards marketing and became an official partner at my book launch gala.”
“I love getting creative with Joint Ventures where all parties create great relationships, generate results and walk way a winner. Everyone can win in business as long as you are open minded and willing to share,” says Anastasia, who is now developing several more Joint Ventures that will benefit her efforts.
“The fun keeps on happening and I’m glad I can do it with others who are passionate and live the same values I enjoy – collaboration, transparency and authenticity.”

Congratulations to your phenomenal joint venture success, Anastasia!
Author, businessman and Black Card Books CEO Jean-Guy (JG) Francoeur has known nothing but success. So it is that when he speaks, he has our full attention.
Taking that further, when he tells us “Joint Ventures are unbelievably powerful”, it makes very good sense to, at the very least, explore further the application of this proven strategy as part of your marketing plan.
You already know that a cornerstone of your success as an author and recognized authority on your subject is your ability to seek out and nurture relationships that will enhance your marketing and promotion strategy. Most editions of this newsletter have addressed that in some way.
A Joint Venture is an extension of that, bringing you tangible results in return for your bringing the same to another. As you continue your author journey, it’s vital that you seek out opportunities to establish Joint Venture relationships. The establishment of just one mutually beneficial relationship has the ability to take you to the next level in a hurry and keep you there.
The bottom line? Don’t shut the door to any relationship that can benefit your marketing strategy. At the very least, investigate the possibilities and, if convinced a Joint Venture opportunity is there for the taking, jump on it. Better to have tried and come up short than to regret later a lost opportunity.
