One of the founders of the personal development movement, Earl Nightingale, had this amazing insight:
Most people tiptoe their way through life, hoping they make it safely to death.
How many potential businesses fell by the wayside or failed because someone did not act on an impulse – either to start the business – or make that all important call that would have catapulted their results permanently into a prosperous position.
My dear friend, Tony Robbins, has always said – “Success leaves clues!” That is so true.
Here is another thing I have discovered – Clues, Hints, Nudges, Ideas, Gut feels and Impulses are a few of the methods that God uses to communicate with us. (Or the Universe)
Acting on these impulses is something we learn over the years. Will you always get them right? – Probably not. But you will live a life of sadness and quiet desperation if you never act on anything.
Why don’t we act? FEAR. There have been many acronyms for FEAR over the years. I like this one from my buddy, Barry Spilchuk – FORGETTING EVERY ALTERNATIVE RESULT.
We see an opportunity and we get fearful (FULL of FEAR). It reminds of a scary event from our PAST – we forecast it into our FUTURE – and it FREEZES us NOW.
If we ACT on an impulse – what is the worst thing that can happen?
- You ask someone for a date – NO – What’s the alternative – YES
- You ask someone for a sale – NO – What’s the alternative – YES
- You ask someone for a loan – NO – What’s the alternative – YES
- You try a new marketing tool – IT DOES NOT WORK – What’s the alternative –
Whether NO or YES…life goes on and you get to ASK SOMEONE ELSE or ….
YOU ENJOY THE RESULT YOU HAD THE IMPULSE TO ACT ON!
Did you ever notice all the IMPULSE ITEMS are placed next to the cash register in the grocery stores? WHY? You will stand next to them for a few minutes and you have to make decisions – I WANT that chocolate bar – AND – I don’t NEED it. (Don’t buy it)
I WANT those batteries – AND – I NEED them. (But them!)
Sometimes you have to take a chance, you have to STOP playing it SAFE 24/7.
Years ago – I took a chance and went on a blind date – for over 30 years I have been so grateful I did. Anne is the love of my life. (Truthfully – it was Anne who took the chance!)
I have acted on many IMPULSES, hunches or gut feelings over the years regarding business decisions. Of course they didn’t all win. But each one – Win or Lose – taught me more and more about listening to my gut.
