Every now and then, a normal human emotion called sadness creeps into our life. Circumstances and experiences like losing a loved one or a job, feeling disappointed, failing at something, or feeling like the world just seem so full of crap trigger our feelings of being sad. Sadness is a normal human emotion. But, when sadness becomes pervasive and prolonged, it turns into Depression.
Depression, according to American Psychiatric Association is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. It can vary from mild depression to severe depression.
And, Cindy Girard, a speaker, social entrepreneur, and author of the groundbreaking book The Great Escape: Helping Someone Break FREE from the Deep, Dark Dungeon of Depression who was once diagnosed with depression shared her experiences on how she got out and broke the chains that kept her in the dungeon of depression in an article published by Women’s Health Magazine.

In this article, Cindy courageously shared her story of growing up feeling unloved and how her parents’ divorce collapsed her world that triggered her depression to how she committed and thought suicide as her only way out. However, with interventions from various mental health professionals, support group from her church, and being with close friends, Cindy was able to deal and triumph over her depression.
According to Cindy, “Now, at the age of 51, I’ve been free of depression for about six years. Some of my responsibilities lightened, and I now have an amazing psychiatrist. I finally realized it’s okay not to be perfect; it’s part of being human. This was incredibly freeing and healing. I’ve learned that laughter really is good medicine. I celebrate progress, even if it’s baby steps. And I know self-care is enormous. So seek help if you need it. If you don’t get it, keep seeking. Surround yourself with people who will support you, accept you, and love yourself for who you are.”
Having a firsthand experience in dealing with depression and triumphantly escaped from it, Cindy wrote her book The Great Escape to equip individuals to help them free someone they care about from this dark place called depression.
