As Lady Gaga stepped up to the microphone to accept the first ever ICON AWARD she said something that was so simple, yet so profound. She tearfully choked out, “I wish people knew how many BAD songs I had to write before I wrote a great one.”
We tend to very hard on and expect perfection from ourselves – sometimes to the point of PERFECTION PARALYSIS – “If it’s not perfect, I won’t release it.”
That is the exact opposite of what you should do. If you are a speaker, SPEAK! Every speech is not going to be perfect.
If you are a writer, WRITE. Every page will not be Pulitzer Prize quality.
If you are a musician… PLAY or WRITE. Not every note will be pitch perfect and not every song will get you a Grammy!
There are not too many guarantees in life but I will personally guarantee you this – If you DON’T make any speech, if you DON’T write a single page, if you DON’T hit the right note – all because you are not willing to settle for anything less than perfection – the only award you will ever win is the – OH CRAP WHY DOESN’T ANYONE APPRECIATE ME Award. They don’t appreciate you because they don’t know that you exist!!!
Lady Gaga advises to write a lot and keep the best ones…and she gets paid MILLIONS to celebrate her natural gifts and talents. She never knows what the good ones will be until she writes a few not-so-good-ones.
Look at a professional baseball player. He gets paid millions to do what he loves…AND… if he is successful at bat, 27 times out of 100, he’ll get paid $3-5 Million. If he is just a bit better and gets three more hits per 100 at bats he be paid between $12 – 20 Million!
JUST three extra hits out of a hundred gets you four to six times the income.
A baseball player can’t get a hit unless he goes to the plate. Lady Gaga can’t write a song, let alone sing it, if she doesn’t sit down at the piano. You cannot celebrate your gifts and talents until you make up your mind that failure is a part of the process.
FAIL your way to success! Strike out three times before you get a hit. Throw three chapters into the garbage bin until the inspiration hits you. Write a ‘stinker’ until the time your symphony comes through you. Do something – FIX IT – Do something different.
The number one way to get moving is to answer this question – WHY do I want it?
Whatever you want “IT” to be.
For you, “IT” may be: A highly paid speaker; A prolific writer and content creator; A successful musician; A great athlete; A well paid business person; An AWESOME parent; A wonderful spouse; A dedicated child of God.
So, that covers -“IT”. Now let’s do – WHY?
Why do you want “IT”, so bad. I promise you, you’ll never get “IT” until you answer “WHY”.
Coming from an impoverished background – my WHY’s were simple.
- I NEVER wanted my kids to be raised like I was. They will never be fed with food stamps and government assistance.
- I want to show my kids and my clients that with the right mindset, heart set and work ethic, they can achieve anything they want.
- I want to show business people that their marketing can be so much better when they try new things – like a book – so they can provide for their families.
I have had many more WHY’s but the above three are on-going and constant for me.
What’s your WHY? WHY do you want it SO MUCH that you will risk, embarrassment, ridicule, failure and…YES…IMPEFECTION to get it.
When your WHY is solid and certain – you can’t be stopped.
I’ll finish with this last piece of wisdom that applies to Lady Gaga, successful speakers, authors, athletes, you and me – it works for absolutely everyone:
Be REAL – Be TRUE – Be YOU
