“Mom, can I get a dog?”
“Sure honey…but we’re going to have to convince your father.”
“How do we do that?”
“We’ll have to show him WHY you want it, NEED it, HAVE to HAVE IT! – and – You have to appeal to dad’s way of thinking and his interests!”
The next day ‘Dad’ – who was a big fan of David Letterman – was handed a TOP TEN LIST – REASONS WHY I SHOULD HAVE A DOG.
The list had the usual promises on it:
# 10 – I love dogs
# 9 – Dogs love me
# 8 – I PROMISE I’ll take care of him.
# 7 – I’ll walk him every day – he’ll be my BUDDY.
# 6 – I will love him so much – I will do ALL the pooper scooping!
#’s – 5,4,3 and 2 were even more compelling…but… #1 clinched the deal…
#1 – I have two older siblings – I want to be someone’s BIG BROTHER and love them the way I was loved!
The next day – there was a four-legged black mutt named – of course – BUDDY wandering through the house!
The TOP TEN LIST convinced ‘Dad’ to expand the family – BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY – it convinced Buddy’s Master that he wanted a dog in the first place!
My old friend, John Kanary, used to say, “To be convincing – you have to be convinced!”
You know the number one reason people get their books done? Reach their Goals? Achieve uncommon results?
#1 – They have convinced themselves of their WHY.
So many seminar leaders these days are asking, “WHAT’s YOUR WHY?” It’s the current BUZZ WORD. One small challenge – there are not many people telling you how to find your WHY?
Let’s end the frustration… Let’s talk about your WHY and HOW to get it…
WHY? By definition – What is your REASON, Your CAUSE or Your PURPOSE?
Hmm… let’s break down the simple word and see if there any clues inside this HUGE three-letter word.
W – H – Y I wonder if that could stand for: WHAT HAS YOU
What Has You – fascinated? What Has You – amped up? What Has Your – attention?
What Has You…so interested that you can’t think about anything else, can’t sleep.
What Has You so infatuated that it has unlocked your imagination, creativity and compassion?
One of my dear friends sells Real Estate…he absolutely loves it. WHY? His honest to goodness belief is that EVERYONE has the RIGHT and the NEED to own a house. He is compelled to help someone find a house IF – and ONLY IF – THEY REALLY WANT ONE!
In other words – the clients must have their WHY’s so strong that getting a home is a mere formality…no matter what the obstacles.
Here’s a simple method to figure out what your why is. (It’s simple…but it may not be easy) Oh, by the way – we have already discussed it! Remember the boy with the dog?
STEP #1 – Write down what you want to BE – DO or HAVE in your life.
STEP #2 – Pick one that currently has a hold of your heart or imagination.
STEP #3 – Write your TOP TEN LIST as to WHY DO I WANT THIS? (You can make it a list
of 20 or 30 if you wish. (The more the better).
IF – AND ONLY IF – One or more of your reasons WHY does one of the following:
Makes you emotional
Moves you to tears
Unlocks your compassion
Makes your heart smile
Makes you want to get off your butt and start working IMMEDIATELY…
YOU WILL HAVE YOUR WHY!
If your TOP TEN list does not have even ONE thing that moves you and stirs your inner self… You are NOT THERE – YET! And guess what – that’s okay!
Keep asking WHY until you really GET IT.
When you do – You’re life will change forever!
