“You either follow up or fold up.”
International bestselling author and global publishing consultant Gerry Robert doesn’t mince words when it comes to highlighting the choice faced by authors, both new and seasoned. His ‘go big or go home’ take can’t be stressed enough when it comes to ensuring the post-publication success of your book and yourself as a credible authority in your field of expertise.
Surprisingly, statistics show that the overwhelming majority of entrepreneurs and business owners are guilty of FUF – Follow Up Failure.
Of course, a cynic could argue, with considerable merit, that most of those same entrepreneurs and business owners have managed to stay in the game despite their follow-up shortcomings, so why bother going through all the trouble? Simple. Success is never guaranteed. Anything you can do to increase the prospect of it coming your way deserves your full attention. As such, maximizing the return on your investment of time and energy should always be front of mind.
Recognizing who’s a hot prospect in terms of advancing your marketing efforts is key, but on its own, it’s just an initial step. Coupling that with a step-by-step process that will allow you to more effectively reach out to them is where the real value lies. Most fortunately, Black Card Books’ authors have access to the tried, true and tested wisdom of Jean-Guy (JG) Francoeur, CEO of Black Card Books and author of MESSY Manager, a candid look at what makes businesses successful. But he also knows a thing or two about what will make you successful and he’s more than willing to share his advice.
We’ve said it before but it’s well worth repeating – no one knows your book like you. As such, no one is better positioned to promote it, and the expertise behind the words, that are yours. But any advice or assistance that’s available is most worthy of your attention. For Black Card Books (BCB) authors, when an invaluable resource like JG speaks, it’s time to sit up and listen. After all, like all those at BCB, he wants nothing more than for you to succeed post-publication and well beyond.

ADV. MARY BOSIU: Preparation Is The Key That Opens The Door To Endless Opportunities
Adv. Mary Bosiu is a testament to one indisputable truth: If you put in the effort, rewards will follow. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but, eventually, there will be a pay-off.
A well-known and highly respected motivational speaker and personal development trainer, Mary has written three inspirational books, her latest being Success Fundamentals Vol. II: Nuggets & Pearls Of Wisdom To Help You Pump The Greatness In You! published by Black Card Books.
Mary’s extensive work in the area of personal development has consistently earned her awards and seen her invited to speak at a number of high-calibre corporate events as well as deliver training modules. Towards the end of 2015, she also began delivering her own one-day training sessions for which attendees pay a fee.
For Mary, preparation in advance of her public events is a major focus and rightly so.
“I prepare flyers for the event and, armed with the flyers, I knock on as many doors as possible through calls and meetings. From that I develop a prospect list and that list generates people that end up coming to my events.”
“I also create a Facebook event page. I prepare a page cover photo that reflects critical points about my event. And I do regular Facebook posts that mention my upcoming event. Lately, I’ve done billboards to promote my events as well.”
Mary also gives free one-hour inspirational talks. On January 22, she will host one such event for all her previous event participants. She intends to contact them and do more Facebook posts to invite as many people as possible, whether they have attended a previous event or not. The aim of her free events is to refuel the inspirational spirit that emanated from her earlier events; to ask participants to share successes linked to her events; to offer early bird pricing for an event scheduled for this coming May this year; and to market her books, CDs, public events, guest speaking engagements and training events.
Mary has been reaping the fruits of her labours. The opportunities that have comes her way are impressive, to say the least, including:
- One of the largest banks in her country of Lesotho, Standard Lesotho Bank, gave away her book at an event where Syleena Johnson, a well-known singer, was the guest speaker. Syleena autographed her book before giving copies to unemployed female university graduates she was called on to motivate. In addition, Standard Lesotho Bank is one of the corporations, that has sponsored her latest book under BCB’s Fund It Coaching Program.
- Another Lesotho bank has tabled a proposal that she become its Ambassador on Financial Education. This is largely in part because of the training module she offers on financial intelligence.
- She has been invited to be a panellist on a TV show hosted on TBN Africa. The episode is titled Debt And How to Get Out Of The Debt Trap. She was also invited to give a one-hour motivational talk on the national radio station, Radio Lesotho.
- She has been invited to design a training module on leadership skills for GBR Leadership Academy to be established in South Africa.
- She served as a keynote speaker as a high-calibre event organized by PMR Africa and saw service excellence awards presented to deserving corporations in Lesotho.
- She was invited as a guest speaker to an event organized by the Lesotho Institute of Accountants, sharing the stage with many speakers from various countries.

Peggy Weekes – Author of A Mix of Two Worlds: Nature’s Best from the East and the West for Optimum Health
Having taken the time to write about a topic she strongly believes in and is very passionate about, Peggy Weekes is anticipating the pending release of her book A Mix of Two Worlds: Nature’s Best from the East and the West for Optimum Health.
Peggy is very interested in helping others, as well as herself, navigates the journey of achieving optimum health through a variety of natural means.
As a great way to start off the new year and get people thinking about their health, Peggy and her church recently organized a health and wellness event. To achieve a good return on the investment of time and effort put into her event, Peggy plans to send out a survey to follow up on what went well, what participants liked and what can be improved upon for her next event.
Using social media combined with more traditional methods of communicating has been very effective for Peggy in terms of spreading word of her events.
Peggy says setting up a booth also helps extend the services that she is offering. She ensures that marketing material is printed and displayed. During a recent event, Peggy pre-sold her book at a discounted price as well as gave those who bought a book a free offer of QRMA testing wherein the health products she distributes will be recommended based on their needs.
“I did get a lot of vendors who were interested in participating in the event but some I had to regretfully decline, either because their products were not suited for the event or there were other involved vendors offering the same products or services.”
The bottom line? Peggy receives more potential leads for her business because she continuously follows up with both attendees and vendors by email.
