I have the honour of circling the globe about five to six times per year.
That’s a lot of frequent flyer miles. It’s a lot of packing and unpacking too!
People often ask two questions of me about my travel:
ONE – DO YOU EVER GET TIRED OF IT? In a word – NO! – I am absolutely in love with what I do. I have the honour of people asking for my presence in their countries and then I get to teach them how to use a book as a marketing tool. I still get goose bumps when someone comes up and says, “Getting my own book and becoming an author has literally changed my life! Thank you Gerry!” (Secret – I even got a little misty-eyed as I typed that last sentence).
When you feel that way about your life’s work – How can you get tired of it?
The number two question I get asked is:
HOW DO YOU STAY ORGANIZED WITH ALL THAT PACKING?
It occurred to me that you might like a list of how I stay organized and sane while traveling about 200,000 miles a year. So, here is my list in the form of an itinerary.
Feel free to print it off and take it with you.
#1 – I ACTUALLY HAVE AN ITINERARY FOR EACH TRIP!
My staff prepares a city-by-city / step-by-step itinerary for each stop along the way as follows:
WHO is taking me to the airport / What time are they picking me up / Driver’s Phone number
WHAT is the FLIGHT # / FLIGHT TIME / FLIGHT DURATION / SEAT # on the plane
WHICH AIRLINE / WHICH TERMINAL
WHO is picking me up at the other end
WHAT is the name of MY HOTEL / CONFIRMATION #
WHAT DAY am I speaking / WHAT TIME / VENUE NAME / DURATION of the speech
WHO is speaking before me (if any) AND AFTER me (if any)
I keep all my suits and shirts individually wrapped in the plastic from the dry cleaners.
The plastic acts as a ‘crease barrier’ so it is usually not necessary to pay the hotel dry cleaning rates! I also leave everything on the hangers so I can just hang them up immediately.
I pack the matching belt to my shoes – in the left shoe. (Fashion tip guys – MATCH your belt to your shoes)
I also pack the appropriate socks to go with the shoes in the other shoe.
I keep all my cords in one pouch – Cell phone charging cords etc.
REMEMBER – to pack your International adapters. Many countries have different electrical systems and it’s frustrating to have the wrong plug. All good airport gift shops sell the adapters.
#4 HOTEL ROOM ORGANIZATION
SHOES – always in the same place in every room – UNDER the TV – lined up neatly. Sometimes I have as many as seven pairs of shoes so they have to look organized, shined and polished.
POCKET STATION – All the stuff from all my pockets goes in the same spot – usually on the dresser next to the TV. This way I am not looking for keys in one spot and my wallet in another.
TOILETRIES – I always place one of the hotel facecloths on the left side of the sink. My shaving kit, mouthwash, toothpaste and vitamins go on that facecloth.
OTHER SUITCASE ITEMS
There are actually some modern hotels that do not have dressers anymore – so you have to leave some stuff in your suitcase: Under garments, swimsuits etc.
I like to pack my balloon bag as well. It’s a blow-up bag that I can use to relax around the pool.
By doing all of the above in my hotel room it give a feeling of continuity and it always feels like home and I am never searching for stuff.
ONE LAST TIP FOR NOW…
Keep your room clean! A messy room is the sign of a MESSY MIND!
When you change clothes – either hang it up or put it away into your laundry bag.
As your career continues to expand, as your celebrity grows, as your impact starts garnering you more influence – you will end up traveling more and more. (Only if you want to of course)
Use the above travel tips to make your trips more enjoyable and profitable.
I’ll see you in a Frequent Flyer Lounge soon! Happy trails!
