As an inventor, Alexander Graham Bell had few peers. That said, bet on the fact that he had his fair share of rejections. How else could he have uttered the above noted view? He knew and experienced rejection, but he also knew rejection wasn’t an end game situation. He learned from it, persevered and, well, the rest is history.
As your author journey continues, you, too, will deal with rejection. That’s a given. But when silence greets your advances, there’s an opportunity to re-examine your approach and then re-engage to your advantage. Remember, failure isn’t close to being a failure if you learn from it and apply what you learned to your benefit.
You’ve hit ‘Send’ and your press release is on its way to those on your recipient list, be they editors, journalists, or bloggers – generally anyone who has an audience that demands fresh content from new sources. How is it possible those recipients won’t get back to you quickly? After all, you have something they need – a unique story or, at the very least, a fresh take on a topic crying out for something different. Well, prepare yourself. Chances are you won’t hear back from many right away. Chances are better if you won’t hear back from some at all.
So what to do? If, after three or four days, you haven’t heard back from one, a few, or all you sent your press release to, send a follow-up email. Most media types don’t mind a gentle reminder. In fact, you’ll find most to be very appreciative of your persistence, providing your approach as equal parts professional and respectful. Asking ‘What gives?’ will get you nowhere.
In your follow-up, offer something new and exclusive; something that wasn’t included in your original email. Bring attention to that. If your press release was about your book or a related service, include a testimonial to further your case, or a link to information that supports the message of your original press release. And yes, make sure to include your original release as a reference, preferably linking to the version that’s on your website.
So, what to do if you’ve followed up once or even twice and you still haven’t received a response? Two words – move on. At that point, it’s a safe assumption the editor or the journalist simply isn’t interested in your press release and its related pitch. Do not take that personally. Most importantly, do not burn bridges with a nasty rebuke. Word will get around pretty quickly that you’re difficult to work with and that’s not very good at all.
As an alternative, you could send your original email to a colleague of the person you originally contacted. However, you have to be up-front, telling him or her that you first reached out to his or her colleague.
If your press release or pitch receives little or no attention from all or most you emailed it to, it’s time to do a little soul searching. Perhaps your press release simply isn’t enticing enough on its own. Is there another angle you can take? Maybe you can tailor your release to speak to an ongoing news item (news-jacking), giving it more relevance and a better shot at coverage.
Of course, long before issuing your first press release to the media, it’s to your huge advantage to establish a relationship with media representatives. When at events where the media is in attendance, introduce yourself. Be familiar with editors’ and journalists’ work and comment on it. Chances are when your name pops up in their inboxes, they’ll be quicker to open your email.

When reaching out to someone who can help you attain your goals, it’s imperative that you do so confidently. It’s also vital that you make it as easy as possible for them to give you the attention you seek.
