“When one door closes, another opens, but we often look so long and regretfully at the closed door that we don’t see the one which has opened for us.”
As an inventor, Alexander Graham Bell had few peers. That said, bet on the fact that he had his fair share of rejections. How else could he have uttered the above noted view? He knew and experienced rejection, but he also knew rejection wasn’t an end game situation. He learned from it, persevered and, well, the rest is history.
As your author journey continues, you too will deal with rejection. That’s a given. But when silence greets your advances, there’s an opportunity to re-examine your approach and then re-engage to your advantage. Remember, failure isn’t close to being a failure if you learn from it and apply what you learned to your benefit.
You’ve hit ‘Send’ and your press release is on its way to those on your recipient list, be they editors, journalists, or bloggers– generally anyone who has an audience that demands fresh content from new sources. How is it possible those recipients won’t get back to you quickly? After all, you have something they need– a unique story or, at the very least, a fresh take on a topic crying out for something different. Well, prepare yourself. Chances are you won’t hear back from many right away. Chances are better if you won’t hear back from some at all.
So what to do? If, after three or four days, you haven’t heard back from one, a few, or all you sent your press release to, send a follow-up email. Most media types don’t mind a gentle reminder. In fact, you’ll find most to be very appreciative of your persistence, providing your approach as equal parts professional and respectful. Asking ‘What gives?’ will get you nowhere.
In your follow-up, offer something new and exclusive; something that wasn’t included in your original email. Bring attention to that. If your press release was about your book or a related service, include a testimonial to further your case, or a link to information that supports the message of your original press release. And yes, make sure to include your original release as a reference, preferably linking to the version that’s on your website.
So, what to do if you’ve followed up once or even twice and you still haven’t received a response? Two words– move on. At that point, it’s a safe assumption the editor or the journalist simply isn’t interested in your press release and its related pitch. Do not take that personally. Most importantly, do not burn bridges with a nasty rebuke. Word will get around pretty quickly that you’re difficult to work with and that’s not very good at all.
As an alternative, you could send your original email to a colleague of the person you originally contacted. However, you have to be up-front, telling him or her that you first reached out to his or her colleague.
If your press release or pitch receives little or no attention from all or most you emailed it to, it’s time to do a little soul searching. Perhaps your press release simply isn’t enticing enough on its own. Is there another angle you can take? Maybe you can tailor your release to speak to an ongoing news item (news-jacking), giving it more relevance and a better shot at coverage.
Of course, long before issuing your first press release to the media, it’s to your huge advantage to establish a relationship with media representatives. When at events where the media is in attendance, introduce yourself. Be familiar with editors’ and journalists’ work and comment on it. Chances are when your name pops up in their in boxes, they’ll be quicker to open your email.
HAMID SAFAEI: Being a More Effective Leader Involves Much More Than Simply Recruiting More Staff Says Bestselling Author and Certified Executive Coach
Bestselling author and certified executive coach Hamid Safaei helps business leaders, senior managers, and budding entrepreneurs multiply their results by helping them personally grow to the next level.
Hamid recently had a fantastic interview with Dean Allen of the BookPals Business Sanity Podcast that provides tips to help make business owners’ lives easier. Hamid shared lessons and perspectives on highly effective leadership, much like those that are covered in his thought-provoking book, First Class Leadership: How Highly Effective Teams Can Achieve Breakthrough Results. The interview touched on the business owners’ mindsets, focusing on taking their business to higher levels of success by growing and recruiting more staff. When business growth includes an increase in employees as one of its components, the people side of the business typically becomes more of a focus.
According to Hamid, the only way to grow your business successfully when you bring in more staff is by being a more effective leader. In other words, there is a lot more to business growth than simply making the decision to recruit more staff. As his book outlines wonderfully, there are other things to think about when you make that decision.
Hamid also shared that he started his business journey when he was just 14 years old. He was passionate about leading and about personal development. That forced him to study organizational management. His passion on the subject connected him with first class leaders in politics and business. Hamid revealed that while he learned a lot from them, he also served as their coach. This brought him to where he is currently at with a strong desire to give back to society as an author, a public speaker and a coach.
In the interview, Hamid also touched on the following:
- What first class leadership is and how people can become first class leaders.
- The qualities of first class leaders and what they should develop for first.
- What first class leaders have mastered.
- How to create a fire in the bellies of your followers.
- How to make decisions as a leader.
- The importance of surrounding yourself with smart people.
- How to develop sound strategies.
- Nurturing the “seed” of talent.
- The most profound leadership lessons he has learned.
The interview ended with a review of what can be gained from Hamid’s coaching program, events, and speaking workshops. You can listen to the full interview HERE.

When reaching out to someone who can help you attain your goals, it’s imperative that you do so confidently. It’s also vital that you make it as easy as possible for them to give you the attention you seek.
Each and every day, editors and journalists around the globe are inundated with press releases, most of which arrive via email. Not all are going to grab their attention, but there are things you can do to make that more likely, as reviewed in last month’s edition of The Power of Performance Newsletter.
Still, you’ll encounter instances where your email receives no reply, leaving you to wonder what went wrong. Was your press release poorly presented? Was its content not compelling or interesting enough to present to the target audience you seek? Was it simply lost in the shuffle?
Having received no acknowledgment, you want to follow-up and should but only in a way that is professional, respectful and helpful. Remember, the editor or the journalist you are reaching out to owes you nothing. Rather, the onus is on you to start the conversation and keep it going. Be persistent in that endeavor, but don’t be pushy or rude. If that still doesn’t bring the result you’re seeking, learn from the experience and move on. Tomorrow is another day awaiting the best you that you can be.
