There seem to be a lot of famous ‘steps’ in the world. Everyone who visits Rome has to climb the Spanish Steps. When I was at the Batu Caves in Malaysia there were brick-like steps, lots of them. Then there are the infamous steps up the mountain in Mach Pichu, Peru.
It’s very interesting to me that people will travel across the world to climb mountains, ascend famous staircases and do whatever it takes to make it to the top of these world famous monuments and yet – sometimes we don’t take the necessary steps to live our dreams and get things done.
If you want to make it to the top of the Spanish Steps you will have to take 135 steps. If you want to claim victory and say, “I ascended the stairs at Batu Caves!” you must take 272 steps. If you want to conquer the mountain at Machu Pichu you will end up taking 1,900 very skinny steps! (Yes – Nineteen hundred)
You know what the toughest step to take is? Your next one – and what’s true is – it’s only tough – IF – you are going after something that matters to you and you’re afraid.
vIt’s easy to take the steps that distract you from your dreams. We can have ‘just one more’ donut if we’re on the steps to our next diet. It’s easy to say, “I’ll have just one more beer and I’ll cut back tomorrow.” When we utter or even think about the word ‘tomorrow’ we are consciously choosing to take a step away from our dreams.
Let’s look at one more thing about the Spanish Steps – since they are the smallest of our three examples today. To stand at the top – step number 135 – you have to take the first step. If you feel so inclined you can take two or three steps at a time but ultimately you have to take each step to get to the top.
It’s also interesting to note that you have to take the steps in a specific order.
Many people want to achieve their dreams by getting to the TOP STEP as fast as they can – that is admirable – but sometimes it’s delusional.
Let’s say you want to raise $40,000.00 to expand your dream. Do you simply go to potential investors and say, “Can you please loan me $40K?” You could do that but the likelihood of you receiving the money is remote – VERY remote.
You must ask yourself, “What are the steps I need to take to generate enough interest so people would think about investing?”
STEP ONE – Build the vision of how amazing your end result will be and how it helps people.
STEP TWO – Do a business plan that shows potential investors how their money is going to be safe, how it’s going to be used and how it’s going to grow.
STEP THREE – Make a list of people you know who may be interested in supporting you as you grow your dream and your business.
STEP FOUR – Make a phone call and ask three questions:
- May I have your permission to speak with you about a business idea, a personal dream that’s important to me?
- Do you still invest in new ideas that have the potential of a good return?
- If you like what you see would you be in a position to invest some or all of what I need to make it happen?
The above questions are just a guideline to show you – THERE ARE STEPS IN THE PROCESS – you don’t just go and blurt out “Can you give me $40K?”
What about your dream? Imagine yourself standing at the top of your mountain. Feel the freedom. Let the sense of accomplishment wash over your whole body. Feel the gratitude from all of those that you have helped. Your smile is seemingly permanently etched on your face. You did it!
So now, in order to achieve that dream…
What is the first step? And the next?
REALIZE THIS – every step you take is either TOWARD your dream or AWAY from it. It’s always your choice.
Here’s to THE NEXT STEP – It’s the ONLY ONE YOU CAN TAKE!!!
