When Shaun Rein speaks, people listen…and well they should.
As the founder and managing director of CMR (Chinese Market Research Group), Rein is a world-recognized strategy consultant whose insights have found a regular home with widely respected publications as The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review and Forbes. Add to that his success as the author of The End Of Cheap China: Economic And Cultural Trends That Will Disrupt The World, an Amazon bestseller which the Financial Times has hailed as “brilliantly written.”
So it is that when Rein offers advice on how to chart a course towards writing a book that will attain bestseller status, we would be wise to pay close attention.
But it’s one piece of advice from Rein that particularly stands out – “You need to spend as much time planning and executing your marketing campaign as you did writing the book.” He adds he was “surprised” to discover that authors must spend at least as much time marketing their book as they did writing it. In other words, once you’re keyboard stops clacking, you’re not nearly done. Far from it.
The goal, notes Rein, is to generate as much interest for your book, pre-publication, as possible with the goal of securing as many pre-orders as you can. No matter how terrific your content is, if people don’t buy in early, you risk losing momentum with little prospect of retaining it.
Rein’s advice is solid but marketing versus writing time, and the timing of those processes, is but one consideration as you plan your strategy in the hopes of adding “bestselling author” to your résumé.
Again, there are no guarantees your book will find its way onto a list of bestsellers but there are things can you do to give it the best possible chance of attaining that status. It starts with a commitment to succeed and then following up with proven practices that will give you every opportunity to do so.

MICAH D.BARNES: Always Meet New People, Really Listen To What They Have To Say, And All Good Things Will Come Your Way
Motivated to share and reinforce positive messages geared to young people, Micah D. Barnes’ soon-to-be-released book Who Stole My Future? A Guide To Building Positive, Productive And Empowered Youth In Our Community is well on its way to being a bestseller.
Before embarking on his author journey and spreading his wings as a motivational speaker, Micah toiled as a video editor in a busy Jacksonville, Florida newsroom. That experience kept him up to speed on current events as well as connected him closely to both the national and local community. That has proven key as the focus of his book – helping youth stay positive and productive while giving parents practical tools to keep their charges safe – remains the subject of much debate, and frustration, in communities big and small.
While Micah uses his book’s pending release to help him secure speaking engagements, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his marketing himself and his book, including one “unusual” networking strategy – Uber.
In addition, Micah says, he’s very active and visible in his community, volunteering when there’s an opportunity, and he takes advantage of local networking opportunities to market his book. And then there’s his existing relationship with the media which opens the door to media coverage that might not otherwise be attainable.
Speaking to the volunteer aspect of his marketing efforts, Micah notes that after attending a volunteer fair for a school district’s after-school program, the program organizer ‘Googled’ him and found out he was an author and invited him to speak to students throughout the district.
Black Card Books authors would be very wise to heed Micah’s advice as follows:
- Network, network and then network again. Use whatever means possible to constantly meet new people. My goal is to always obtain more knowledge, and content, and I do that by listening to people. People love to be listened to and value anyone who does just that. They end up selling themselves on my book. I don’t have to say “Buy my book.”
- Get, and stay, connected to your community. If you can find a way to relate your topic to the needs, desires and problems in your community, you will get media exposure. But you have to let the media know, so issue a press release.
- Join Facebook groups with people who share your interests and concerns, and can benefit from your knowledge. Focus on providing useful content. Not everyone wants you to simply sell them.
- Focus on your mission. “I started out trying to push my book, always mentioning that I’m an author. Now I let my passion lead the way. Once people felt and witnessed my passion, they naturally asked, ‘What do you do?’ That opened the door to book sales, joint ventures and speaking opportunities.”

JEFFREY GRINEL: RockUrBrain: Fun Memory Game
From Broke To Bestseller
By Jeffrey Grinel
I am up early as I write this. Just another day with an early hustle. Truth is I have been awake since about 3:30 a.m. when I decided I needed to tweet. No, just kidding. I am not President Trump.
The full truth I am avoiding because I cannot believe it happened but here it is. The book I wrote, RockUrBrain: Fun Memory Game, went #1 Bestseller in three categories. It’s true. Thanks to the Black Card Books team, and my loyal followers, I became a #1 bestselling author. I am still stunned by this. I will get to use the phrase from now on when being introduced to speak. That definitely pulls weight and distinguishes my book from many others.
I do like some of the books we outsold on Amazon, which makes it even more exciting. When you can beat authors that you respect, or big name titles, it makes it feel like that much bigger an accomplishment. For example I beat out a book on Pokémon and a book titled How To Think Like Einstein! Fun stuff, beating out the biggest trending video game and also one of the greatest thinkers of our time. I keep laughing to myself, ‘Ya, I beat out Einstein, no biggie!’
I am laughing because the likelihood of me being here is incredibly low. I started this whole book writing campaign pretty much broke. This journey started for me in 2013. My father had just passed away. When that happens, you start to question your life. Am I on the right track? Am I doing the things that would make my father proud?
I was working at a job that was lucrative. However, I had the biggest jerk for a boss. He would make inappropriate jokes about me in front of the whole staff. Things that were not true and that I did not find funny at all. This was a sales job where you are supposed to motivate your sales people, not de-motivate them. I am sure my unhappiness with my job, and my boss, was starting to show in my performance because I was thinking of leaving that job. That decision was made for me when my car was stolen and I got fired in the same week.
That was like a one-two punch to the face. I had to go on unemployment, which is a big drop in pay, plus lay out money for a beater car to get me around. Not only that, when my stolen car was found, I had to pay an impound fee to the tow company that was much higher than the value of my now ruined Honda.
I went through the summer not finding work, money getting tighter and tighter. This continued into the fall. At the end of autumn, my favorite pet, Reeses the cat, passed away. Needless to say, when the holidays rolled around that year, I was not in the mood to celebrate.
When 2014 rolled around, I vowed to make major changes in my life. I started with a decision that I no longer would be put in a position working with a boss, or co-worker, that I did not want to work with. Those days were over for me. I knew the best way to control that would be to start my own business.
I was barely able to sleep that Saturday night. I stayed up thinking how I might get the costs funded. I promised myself, ‘I will speak to as many people as I need to and make this happen.’ I started right away at breakfast the next morning. I sat down with one of the other attendees. It turned out as we started to talk; we knew some of the same people. Long story short, I had my book fully funded within 15 minutes of signing a contract to publish with Black Card Books.
My book has given me many great experiences already and I know many more are in store for me, Now that I am a #1 bestselling author, I wish the same for all of you.
Remember, it all started with a desire to change my life and a decision to act. Those are the two most important elements in any endeavour. So, what is your must score?

Jeff, you truly ROCKED our world! Thank you for the golden nuggets!
What author doesn’t want to write a bestselling book? That is the ultimate testimonial to a job very well done; the greatest compliment of your talents as a writer and credible spokesperson of your chosen subject matter.
As detailed in this edition of The Power of Performance Newsletter, there are a number of concrete things you can and should be doing, both pre- and post-publication, to heighten the prospect that your book will zoom up book listings to #1 status.
However, your book, as terrific as you rightly think it is, won’t, on its own, get to that lofty position. Your book is your personality. Sell yourself effectively by taking full advantage of all marketing opportunities and great things will inevitably come your way.
Put in as much time and effort promoting and marketing your book as you did writing it and you will reap the rewards. But be sure to get started on that process early. After you’ve written your book is too late. Set the pace early, create a buzz associated with your book’s pending publication and you’ll be able to say, sooner than later, the words you’ve longed to say – “I’m a bestselling author.”
Black Card Books, as part of its staunch commitment to your success, is right there to assist you in whatever way it can.
