I am up early as I write this. Just another day with an early hustle. Truth is I have been awake since about 3:30 a.m. when I decided I needed to tweet. No, just kidding. I am not President Trump.
The full truth I am avoiding because I cannot believe it happened but here it is. The book I wrote, RockUrBrain: Fun Memory Game, went #1 Bestseller in three categories. It’s true. Thanks to the Black Card Books team, and my loyal followers, I became a #1 bestselling author. I am still stunned by this. I will get to use the phrase from now on when being introduced to speak. That definitely pulls weight and distinguishes my book from many others.
I do like some of the books we outsold on Amazon, which makes it even more exciting. When you can beat authors that you respect, or big name titles, it makes it feel like that much bigger an accomplishment. For example I beat out a book on Pokémon and a book titled How To Think Like Einstein! Fun stuff, beating out the biggest trending video game and also one of the greatest thinkers of our time. I keep laughing to myself, ‘Ya, I beat out Einstein, no biggie!’
I am laughing because the likelihood of me being here is incredibly low. I started this whole book writing campaign pretty much broke. This journey started for me in 2013. My father had just passed away. When that happens, you start to question your life. Am I on the right track? Am I doing the things that would make my father proud?
I was working at a job that was lucrative. However, I had the biggest jerk for a boss. He would make inappropriate jokes about me in front of the whole staff. Things that were not true and that I did not find funny at all. This was a sales job where you are supposed to motivate your sales people, not de-motivate them. I am sure my unhappiness with my job, and my boss, was starting to show in my performance because I was thinking of leaving that job. That decision was made for me when my car was stolen and I got fired in the same week.
That was like a one-two punch to the face. I had to go on unemployment, which is a big drop in pay, plus lay out money for a beater car to get me around. Not only that, when my stolen car was found, I had to pay an impound fee to the tow company that was much higher than the value of my now ruined Honda.
I went through the summer not finding work, money getting tighter and tighter. This continued into the fall. At the end of autumn, my favorite pet, Reeses the cat, passed away. Needless to say, when the holidays rolled around that year, I was not in the mood to celebrate.
When 2014 rolled around, I vowed to make major changes in my life. I started with a decision that I no longer would be put in a position working with a boss, or co-worker, that I did not want to work with. Those days were over for me. I knew the best way to control that would be to start my own business.
I was barely able to sleep that Saturday night. I stayed up thinking how I might get the costs funded. I promised myself, ‘I will speak to as many people as I need to and make this happen.’ I started right away at breakfast the next morning. I sat down with one of the other attendees. It turned out as we started to talk; we knew some of the same people. Long story short, I had my book fully funded within 15 minutes of signing a contract to publish with Black Card Books.
My book has given me many great experiences already and I know many more are in store for me, Now that I am a #1 bestselling author, I wish the same for all of you.
Remember, it all started with a desire to change my life and a decision to act. Those are the two most important elements in any endeavour. So, what is your must score?
