Women are innate multi-tasker – they balance their career, care for their children, run their household, and maintain relationships with families, friends, and the community. With their crazy schedule and never-ending number of to-do lists, women tend to put sleep last on the list.
Numerous researches have shown that women need more sleep than men, but, the question really is, are they getting any?
Irene Hogan, a National Certified Menopause Practitioner; Nutrition, Natural Medicine & Anti-Aging Specialist; a Professional Compounding Pharmacist; and author of the book, Hot Chixs Hot Sex: How to Survive Menopause shares some secrets on how women can get enough sleep in her article published by Smart Healthy Women. Smart Healthy Women was created as a forum to connect smart women of all ages with experts around the world whose passion is sharing information to make life more informed, interesting, and fun.
In her article, Irene explained that having a routine (a regular sleep-wake schedule), winding down before going to bed, and following some tips below, will give you the sleep you so much deserve.
- Writing a journal
- Removing TVs, electronic devices, and cell phones in the bedroom
- Taking a warm bath before bed with Epsom salts and lavender
- Sleeping in a cool, dark room without any light
- Not consuming alcohol near bedtime
- Restricting caffeine after midday
- Taking natural remedies (melatonin, magnesium, 5-HTP (5-hydroxy L tryptophan), valerian root, lemon balm, passion flower, magnolia, L-theanine, and hops extract)
- Relaxation and hypnosis
According to Irene, “Lack of sleep or poor sleep affects your health in many ways, from tiredness to irritability and moodiness. You can blame them all for not getting enough time between the sheets. If that wasn’t daunting enough, insomnia increases overall mortality and ages you faster.”
