William Phua has never believed in LUCK. He believes that the harder you work, the luckier you will get. Good academic qualification is not the only way to be successful in life because it takes all sorts of people to make the world go round. To be successful, it’s not what you do but how you do it.
Not accepting his present situation to be his final destination, together with his wife, Christina Heng, they embarked on a journey of entrepreneurship seldom or hardly trekked. Their out-of-the-box thinking and ways to make it BIG in business by being different are worth studying and practicing.
William Phua and Christina Heng did not believe their grades define their intelligence. They developed self-confidence by doing things they feared to get a record of successful experiences behind them. They believe success is based on determination to be successful and not destiny. They listen but not to people who have not walked their journey. They embarked on a journey of entrepreneurship because of their desire to achieve something of their own.
During their journey as entrepreneurs, multiple failures did not deter William Phua and Christina Heng from quitting because they know that with every sunset, there will be a sunrise. By not quitting, they believed they should get a reward out of the pain they suffered. If a door cannot be opened, it’s not their door and they were thankful because it prevented them from paths and places not meant for them. They never gave up on their dreams just because it’s not going in the direction they want because they understood that 2 + 7 = 9, so also is 3 + 6.
William Phua and Christina Heng knew that as entrepreneurs, doing what everyone is doing is actually suicidal. You have to be different to be a good marketer because not only does it make the Company look smart, it also makes the customers feel smart. They made what seemed hard and difficult awesomely simple to do—that’s creativity.
As entrepreneurs, William Phua and Christina Heng loved to be entertained but with a different twist. As customers, they do not allow suppliers to entertain them. Instead, they usually pay when it comes to entertaining. Understanding that every interaction is an opportunity to make a positive impact, they made suppliers turned guests, feel welcome and at home. Doing it honestly helps to take care of the rest.
William Phua and Christina Heng managed their staffs, but not their business, as entrepreneurs. By treating their employees right, their customers always come back. Treating right includes not delaying salary and paying bonuses based on future contribution rather than current results. They knew that one does not work productively when the salary is delayed.
Most people only day dream about having more money to retire early and travel the world. Most people dream of being their own bosses. Most complain a lot about not being appreciated in their job or being underpaid. Most people procrastinate from taking action by making excuses that the time is not right, that they do not have enough capital to start their businesses. For most people, every idea that they come across will immediately be offset by negative thoughts. Most people still think that having a “stable” job is better than taking a risk to venture out on their own, but at the same time, they still toy with the idea of wanting to have more money to retire early. Most people just keep making excuses and complaining.
This book highlights why it is important to stop procrastinating and take the first step, even though the future vision is unclear. Many fears are unfounded and overthinking is the biggest mistake. Write your GOAL CARD. You do not have to be the best but you have to be the first.
Be courageous and be passionate about whatever you want to do. Persistency is a must and failure is part of the journey to success. Without failure, there is no success. Keep challenging the protocol to find out if things can be done better. Don’t be a copycat. Always remember that you are not a tree and you can change your present position if you are not happy with where you are.
Develop ways to become successful in business by being different, and provide a thinking process that can be applied to our daily lives. Don’t expect to be treated like a King just because you are bringing benefits to others because it will not end up in a win-win situation.
Others before Self. If you help as many people as possible to achieve what they want, they will ultimately help you achieve what you want.

“There are many books about entrepreneurship and how one can get rich. This story about William and Christina is different, and it does not have any strategies or formulae to help you get rich fast. Their journey of failures, retrenchments, and more setbacks did not wear them out. They accepted every setback and every closed door gracefully and did not give up. ‘Be thankful for closed doors, detours and roadblocks. They protect you from paths and places not meant for you.’ ”
—The Single Woman
"These very powerful statements will inspire those who have been retrenched, those who feel that there is no meaning in life, or those who worry about machines taking over their jobs. They show us that the secret to change is not to worry about change. They focus their energy to build on the new and not to defend the old. They know that letting go is not giving up, as holding on can do more harm. Perseverance to them is about building an immune system to accept more failures and make progress by embracing change. Their inspiring story aptly demonstrates the meaning ‘Heaven does not close doors to those who are willing.’ ”

“I should say it made them stronger and more fearless. They found new doors, new paths, and new roads. ‘Fail, pick yourself up, and fail again—because without this struggle, what is your success anyway?”
“A book that encourages readers to think positively in times when they feel hopeless in pursuing a goal in life. William and Christina have shared very candidly not only about the challenges they faced but also how they have persevered and overcome these by making hard decisions, taking courageous steps, and never giving up. It’s an inspiring book with lots of positive thinking that they are sharing. To borrow the words of Janice Harris, ‘Don’t give up on your dream because it is not going the direction you want. There are different routes to the same destination.’ Indeed they are somebody who has ‘been there and done that.’ ”
